Signs Of Intelligent Life?
Episode #5: Welcome To The Show First aired: 01/30/06 Hello and welcome to the premier episode of Signs Of Intelligent Life?, the newest show on PBones TV. On Signs Of Intelligent Life?, or SOIL, we'll be tossing out pictures of great and hilarious signs seen around the world. It appears the love of funny signs goes beyond just me, and so we're turning this into a regular feature. You may be wondering why this is the premier, and yet it's episode 5 - to answer that question, I would suggest that perhaps you should stop taking these things so seriously. Also, check out the episode guide to see the original three episodes, previously aired here on PBones. Now on to the show! The following episode is brought to you by the letters E and B, for my new friend Emma B. After seeing my site and episode #3, Emma sent the following images my way. They were too perfect not to share and so here they are.
Now I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm amused and amazed at the tiny details artists put in to these signs. For example, not that the poor oaf who's falling to his death appears to be wearing a t-shirt. Ok, that's just a little detail, but now look to his legs, and really, his feet. Now, what I take to be the right foot (the lower of the two) seems to be bare. But the left foot seems to have a cowboy boot on it. So, yeah, I'd say that particular footing can be dangerous. As well, take note of the rocks sliding off the cliff, which seem to have led to this poor hiker's current unfortunate circumstances. "How'd Jack die?" they'll ask back home. "Well, he was hiking around with only one boot on, and he slipped on some pebbles. Yup, he flew right over the side of a cliff" will be the reply. It'd be sad, except that Jack here is nothing but a cartoon. While examining Jack, there are also two other things of note. First, the "cliff" in the drawing is actually part of the outer sign, most likely to make it easier and/or cheaper to print, but if you look at it right, it looks like someone took a big chomp out of the white area. It's sort of like one of those faces or vase optical illusions. But much more amusing are the vibration lines surrounding poor Jack. Take a look, they're right there - vibration lines! Somehow, Jack is vibrating in mid-air. Perhaps his cell phone is ringing ("Yeah, I'm a little busy right now falling off the edge of a cliff, let me call you back.") or he's just full-body flailing around. Either way, I love it.
Our second photo warrants far less analysis than the above, but it is perhaps the funniest of all we've featured on the show thus far. Once again, the original is a nice shot, with good framing and interesting background. Emma, you take a good photo and your contributions are welcome any time. But the real key is the two signs in the foreground, as seen below. This juxtoposition is too perfect, and can't be accidental. So, to the anonymous sign hanger from Florida who put these two together, from all of us at SOIL, let us simply say "Kudos!". ![]() So that's it for this premier (fifth) episode of SOIL. We hope you had fun, and if you find any hilarious signs of your own, snap a picture and send them in. Otherwise, just join us next time when we go on another search for Signs Of Intelligent Life?.
